Spatial Reasoning Games
One of the strands in math is Geometry, which includes spatial reasoning and relationships. These two games (which are addicting and fun) will help develop spatial reasoning for people at any age.

Nouns vs. Verbs
What is the difference between a noun and a verb? Can you identify them in this game? As you do this, the parts of speech get more difficult.
Place Value Tutorial
Again I cannot stress the understanding of place value enough. This tutorial is great to go through for ANY student, strong with the concept or not. Please consider having your child try this. The second half of the tutorial is for students who understand place value with whole numbers and would like to dabble in decimals! We will not work with decimals in class until the end of the year.
Learn the Facts Before you Practice Them
If students do not know the correct answer to a math fact, drill games are useless. It is important to learn the CORRECT answer to a math fact first before trying a drill game.
These games can help when stuck in a particular set of addition facts. You choose the fact (perhaps +3 or +6) to practice, one at a time. There is more than one answer to choose from in the problem given, so that you can see if you get the correct answer.
Perhaps you have mastered addition and would like to try subtraction:
If you are REALLY looking for a good challenge, you can try multiplication games as well:
Good luck!

The Equal Sign
Students in American schools often have trouble understanding the equal sign as well as Algebraic Relationships. This website is great to help students "build" a number sentence.
Try it out and let me know what you think!
Spelling Patterns
Learning patterns in words will help us understand spelling much better. In this game you need to match the pattern with the words.
Here is an awesome website to help you practice. Try Grade 3 first, and pick any unit to play. Once Grade 3 is going well, try to pick grade 4 or 5 for a challenge!
Good luck!
Mental Math - Adding 2 digit numbers together
Adding 2 digit numbers together can be challenging. One strategy is to estimate numbers when appropriate.
- For example, you can think of 69 + 31 as 70 + 30...which equals 100!
Another strategy that works well is to add the ones together, then add the tens together. Add both and you have your answer.
- For example, add 64 + 96. 4+6 is 10 and 60+90 is 150. 150+10 is 160!
Use this website (Ghostblasters) to help you get some practice, it says it is for 2 players but you can play for both:

Place Value Practice
If your child understands place value, it will give them a great base in which to build more difficult math concepts. Students need to have an innate understanding of "Base 10" (blocks which use ones, tens, hundreds, etc...) in order to work with higher level math concepts.
Below are some links to several games which will help your child practice these important skills. Please consider having them try these often.
In the last one, you are trying to understand that numbers are made up of tens and ones...

Reading at Home Log Options
As adults, we sure do a lot of reading online. I would imagine that your children would enjoy this also. Below are some sites that can "count" toward the 20 minutes of reading time for the Reading Log. I really want to instill a love for reading at home, sometimes these high interest stories catch their attention and hold it.
Scholastic News Online ~ Be sure to click on Grade 3 when you want to read an article.
National Geographic for Kids ~ VERY cool articles and stories on this site!
Do you have any other sites that you enjoy that have great news stories for children?
More Math Fact Practice Sites
One focus of good quality math instruction is to teach math fact mastery. In class we will be talking about strategies to help us get to the answer of a math fact. Then, once we understand the strategy we will practice our math facts. Knowing strategies and practicing number sense will help us learn math facts faster. Research shows that once you do this, drill practice in short amounts of time can help with the speed of recalling math facts.
Balloon Invaders
Here are some more websites that your child can try out to practice their math facts. The better we know addition and subtraction, the easier multiplication facts will be for us.

Practicing Math Facts
Periodically, I will post links for students with games that help practice math facts.
This website is amazing! You compete (no names involved) against students from other countries to learn math facts. I especially like the algebra section as this is something that our students at GES lack. You are the pig, competing against some other animal in another country.

Try choosing Math 101, choose addition and a level of difficulty. Try it out and please let me know how you like it with a comment on this blog!
